Abstract

The article investigates the specific features of the so-called phraseological worldview, which is considered to be part of the linguistic worldview. The main focus of the article is the essence and unique nature of phraseological worldview as manifested in English through various phraseological units. The scientific novelty of this work lies in the attempt to obtain information about the importance of phraseological units in modern American poetry. The theoretical significance lies in the fact that this work contributes to German studies by expanding ideas about the potential of phraseological units as well as the linguistic creativity of modern American poets. Since the findings of the research can be used in different courses on English phraseology and lexicology, the article has practical value as well. The author expands on such notions as worldview, linguistic worldview, and phraseological worldview. A worldview is the initial global image of the world, which lies at the basis of a person’s views, presenting the essential properties of the world as understood by a group of people. A linguistic worldview is a special perception of the world through the prism of the language spoken by a specific linguistic community. Linguistic worldview is inherently connected with culture as it develops within its confines and is thus, at least partly, constrained and shaped by it. Using the notion of phraseological worldview, the author sets the goal of analysing English phraseological units in modern American poetry in order to explicate their semantic groups. Being a dynamic entity, the phraseological worldview is constantly augmented with specific phraseological units, whose structure and function depend on the genre a text belongs to. Local and temporal phraseological units, as well as those indicating the feelings and dispositions of the protagonist, seem to predominate in modern American poetry. Thus, phraseological units are not only informative, but, primarily, figurative, evaluative and expressive in their nature, thereby conveying aesthetic and pragmatic information.
