Abstract

This article analyses Buryat comparative structures in the linguocultural, stylistic and connotative aspects, which has never been done before. These language units are expressive, figurative, and able to convey the specificity of the linguistic worldview and the process of world cognition by the native speakers of the Buryat language. The paper dwells on the semantic plane and figurative-expressive function of phraseological units formed on the basis of comparison or metaphoric comparison. The author turned to the works by the Buryat writer D. Batozhabay (1921–1977) and poet D. Ulzytuyev (1936–1972). The analysis revealed positive and negative evaluative comparisons of man in their works. Comparative structures are distinguished by vivid imagery and national uniqueness of a linguistic worldview. Both stable and author’s comparative structures demonstrate the originality of the national worldview. Thus, comparative structures including folklore and epic images, as well as toponyms and images of domestic and wild animals, toward which nomads have formed a certain attitude, can be attributed to the specificity of the Buryat linguistic worldview. These are, for example, negative evaluative images of a cat, a dog, a goat, a pig, a cock, a snake, and others. In addition, images of nature associated with evaluation (in particular when rendering a psychological state) are highlighted: in a depressed mood, a person compares nature with lead, that is, conveys a negative attitude towards lead, its colour. Positive evaluative images, in their turn, are associated with the state of elation, a feeling of happiness and love.
