Abstract

This article used published works by N.K. Krupskaya, materials from central and regional archives as well as information from periodicals to see how the problems of teaching and teacher training are reflected in the written heritage of this prominent member of the Bolshevik Party. In terms of methodology, the paper uses the psychological theory of attitude and the idea of narrative thinking. Special attention is given to pre-revolutionary teachers’ forming a Russia-Wide Teachers’ Union, as well as to teacher training in colleges, teachers’ attitude to the Bolshevik Party, municipal school programme of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (Bolshevik), and propaganda work of N.K. Krupskaya among educators. The author of this paper revealed the effect that certain books and liberal periodicals as well as people of special importance to Krupskaya had on her approaches to teaching and teacher training. The article highlights the influence Krupskaya and V.I. Lenin had on each other when developing the Bolshevik policy on educational intelligentsia and government agencies of pre-revolutionary Russia in the sphere of education. The author comes to the conclusion that in the works of Krupskaya her view on specific problems of teaching and teacher training was influenced by the ideology and the emphasis on “viability” instead of the “truth”.
