Abstract

This article studies the work of interpreters during the official visits of Dutch embassies to Arkhangelsk and other towns of the Russian North in the 17th century. The author analyses the available historical descriptions of the embassies to Russia in 1630–1631 and 1675–1676 as well as reports of diplomatic representatives, focusing on the interpreters’ personality, origin and duties. The study allows us to establish that each time an interpreter from the Ambassadorial Office was sent to Arkhangelsk. His main duties were: being present when meeting the embassies, translating the list of embassy members, interpreting the communication of diplomats with the local administration, and accompanying the embassy to the capital if they had no interpreter of their own. Interpreters that came to Arkhangelsk from Moscow were foreigners by birth. For everyday communication, the Russian party sometimes used foreigners living in Arkhangelsk as interpreters. The expansion of trade between Russia and Holland in the 17th century also led to an increase in the number of people who could speak Russian and who thus were included in the Dutch embassy; this fact, however, did not change the duties of official interpreters. The most important diplomatic issues were discussed with the help of official interpreters from both sides, while daily communication could be carried out without interpreters or involve representatives of the diplomatic mission who spoke both Dutch and Russian. Moreover, embassy servants had their own interpreters
