Abstract

This article investigates the specific nature of modern identification processes among young people in Germany. A special emphasis is placed on political, sociocultural, ethical and religious as well as gender-related aspects of identity, examined here in their interrelationship and interdependence. Identity is presented here as a function of value preferences of individuals and groups. Further, a philosophical and cultural analysis of dominant trends of the current reappraisal of values is undertaken. Key transition pathways from the idea of “rigid” multicultural identity to the new understanding of variety and complexity as a system of individual priorities are discussed. Since the 1990s up to the mid-2010s, Germany had been a multiculturalism pioneer in Western Europe, while German leaders considered their country a good example for other EU members. In view of this, addressing the revision of the attitude toward this ideology among young people seems to be important for understanding common European trends as well as for the Russian-German cooperation. By describing key trends in identity transformation programmes, we can trace the outlines of a possible cultural gap in the father–son relationships in Germany and reveal the typical features dividing representatives of different interpretations of ethical, denominational and social standards within the German society. Moreover, it is pointed out that universalization of the European education system gives an additional impulse for maintaining the values of social mobility, tolerance and multiculturalism. At the same time, German youth is still holding onto conservative family and career values. The recent revival of nationalism under the influence of intercultural tension within the multicultural German society, especially due to the latest migrant crisis, requires our close attention to the cultural identification of German youth.
