Abstract

This topic is relevant due to a number of reasons. Firstly, the interpretations of reflexive pronouns in linguistic literature are quite varied. Secondly, there exist several different classifications of pronouns based on their semantics. Thirdly, the pronoun odin drugogo (‘one another’) is attributed to different semantic categories. Lastly, this pronoun has never been a subject of a special linguistic research. The paper aimed to demonstrate that drug druga is a reflexive pronoun and to determine its place in the group of reflexive pronouns. The material for this research was selected from the National Corpus of the Russian Language. The method of substitution was applied, where drug druga and odin odnogo were put in place of odin drugogo. As a result, the author came to the following conclusions. The reflexive pronoun odin drugogo in all case forms can be replaced by drug druga and odin odnogo. The pronominal nature of odin drugogo is evidenced by its situational, non-content and demonstrative nature, as well as by its contextual correlation and by the isomorphism between odin drugogo and the pronouns sebya, drug druga and odin odnogo. Odin drugogo, like all reflexive pronouns, is context-deictic and anaphoric, referring to the statement it is part of. The actual semantics of odin drugogo is that of the subject of an action. Unlike sebya and like drug druga, it refers to the doers of the same action, each of which is at the same time the object of this action. Thus, odin drugogo indicates a mutual relationship with reciprocal actions. The results of this study can be used in lexicography and morphology to develop semantic classifications of pronouns.
