Abstract

This article studies the cognitive and conceptual planes of Russian proverbs in the generalized model “Text↔Purport↔Meaning”, i.e. the definition and description of their structure (“Text↔Purport”) and semantics (“Purport↔Meaning”), taking into account their multidimensional nature that was discovered by G.L. Permyakov. The purpose of the research is a comprehensive analysis based on two complementary approaches: linguo-semiotic (G.L. Permyakov) and semantic-cognitive (Yu.N. Karaulov). For the study, proverbs representing a person were selected from V.I. Dal’s Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language using the continuous sampling method. The following methods formed the methodological basis for the research: structural-semantic modelling (developed on the basis of Permyakov’s and Karaulov’s methods); observation, and quantitative calculation. The analysis showed that the basic element of the cognitive plane, implemented by means of the “Text↔Purport” model, is the logical component - the purport kernel of any saying, presented by two antonymous lexemes connected by “pure”, logical relations of 4 constructive types. The logical component is the fundamental element of the research, since the structure of the cognitive plane of proverbs is represented by key lexemes of the conceptual plane. The internal organization of the space under study includes 4 formative classes, 28 basic formative groups and 85 invariant thematic pairs. The internal structure of the conceptual plane of the proverbs ("Purport↔Meaning” model) involves the figurative component as its basic element. This component is similar to the logical component in terms of the number of elements forming it, but differs in their figurative characteristic. The internal organization of the conceptual plane is presented by key lexemes, synonymous lexemes, antonymous lexemes, figurative elements, and semantic types. The author believes that the approach presented in this paper will allow us not only to thoroughly study proverbs from “purport to meaning”, but also to determine the limits of their possible use, which implies realization of the communicative-pragmatic approach in the expanded model “Text↔ ↔Purport↔Meaning↔Application”.
