Abstract

This research was carried out within the framework of the structural-semantic approach in order to thoroughly analyse the syntactic constructions from many aspects. The language categories of measure and result are closely interrelated, and this interaction through various semantic-grammatical forms is reflected in abundant linguistic material. The article aimed to identify the factors responsible for the appearance of the syncretic meanings of measure and result in complex sentences. The author applied methods of linguistic description as well as grammatical, transformational, and oppositional analysis. Complex sentences with the semantics of measure and result were examined in detail on the transition scale, which demonstrated a different ratio of grammatical characteristics of the constructions compared: in some constructions the meaning of measure prevails, in others, that of result, while in still others these two meanings are equally distributed. In the course of the research, it became clear that complex sentences acquired the syncretic meanings of measure and result due to the following: correlative words with the semantics of measure; position of these words in relation to the noun and verbs connected with them; possibility of restoring correlates; presence of a conjunction that determines the presence of the meaning of result; and the possibility of various transformations of complex sentences. The results of this investigation can be used to refine the theoretical knowledge of syncretic complex sentences as well as applied in Russian language teaching at universities, colleges and schools.
