Abstract

This article covers the historical origins, aim and intended purpose of Arkhangelsk foundation, its main functions and tasks. The author dwells on the key periods, events and the most important landmarks demonstrating the significance of Arkhangelsk in Russia’s Arctic history, as well as studies its contribution to the exploration and development of the North and the Arctic. Further, Mikhail Lomonosov is described as the founder of Russia’s northern and Arctic geostrategy. The paper shows the role of Arkhangelsk and its citizens in the defence of the country’s northern and Arctic borders throughout the centuries. Special attention is paid to the events of the 20th century that revealed the strategic importance of Arkhangelsk for the country: World War I, the Civil War and Allied intervention in Russia and the Russian North, the Great Patriotic War and the Cold War. Further, the paper studies the contribution of the citizens of Arkhangelsk and Pomorye to the exploration and development of the Northern Sea Route over the centuries as well as to securing its year-round use. The author also points out the Arctic’s becoming an international region in the late 20th and early 21st century and its rapidly growing role in the recent development of the humankind. The author presents key arguments (historical, geopolitical, economic, scientific-educational, intellectual, and cultural) in favour of the prominent role of Arkhangelsk in Russia’s contemporary Arctic policy and in the development of the Russian Arctic both at present and in the future. The article emphasizes the importance of Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov and significance of the Arkhangelsk scientific complex for the innovative development of the Russian North and the Arctic.
