Abstract

The role of universities in the modern society goes beyond the boundaries of their two common missions: educational and scientific. The third mission implies participation of universities in the life of the regional community and is becoming increasingly important. In this context, it is considered from the standpoint of social involvement of educational institutions in regional socioeconomic processes. Universities are growing in importance as they are taking on responsibility not only for internal processes ensuring comfortable conditions for faculty and students, but also for the formation of a developing environment in the region. Based on the studies of corporate social responsibility in business, the authors analyse theoretical approaches to determining social responsibility of universities, identify the forms and mechanisms of its implementation and trace the relationship between social responsibility and the third mission. Despite the fact that the issues of social responsibility are considered based on research in the sphere of business, the approaches developed are beginning to be applied to other public institutions and, in particular, to universities. Social responsibility of universities has its own characteristics due to their mission, structure and form of organization, as well as internal processes and relationships. Taking Northern (Arctic) Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov as an example, the authors dwell on the practical application of the principles of social responsibility at universities. It is argued that the systematic work of universities on the implementation of social responsibility policy helps them achieve their strategic goals and objectives, as it allows them to involve key stakeholders in the development processes.
