Abstract

This article deals with the demarcation between objects and subject-matters of philosophy of religion and religious studies, which is of methodological importance to scholars engaged in scientific, philosophical and theological studies of religion. An object is distinguished from a subject-matter as a field of reality is distinguished from a theoretical abstraction revealing certain regularities in that field. The object of philosophy of religion – religion as a social and spiritual phenomenon – is of theoretical nature that cannot be reduced to descriptions of empirical data. The subject-matter of philosophy of religion includes the essence and nature of religion. Religious studies have religious systems in their historical, ethnic, and cultural frames as their object. However, religious studies have no single subject-matter and thus do not represent a unified discipline. Three sciences, each having different subject-matters and methods (if religion becomes the object of their research), form the core of religious studies: history of religion, sociology of religion and psychology of religion. Various interdisciplinary studies are conducted across them, involving numerous other sciences providing factual material, such as anthropology of religion. A special place in religious studies is occupied by phenomenology of religion. In the 20th century it was viewed as a non-philosophical methodology of religious studies. However, solving philosophical issues it either evolved toward philosophy of religion and theology or produced inconsistent or incomplete solutions. The paper concludes that, if certain aspects of the essence and nature of religion fall within the scope of religious studies, a convergence zone can be found between the subject-matters of religious studies and philosophy of religion.
