Abstract

This article deals with the theoretical study of the metaphor of silence and its importance for modern culture. The paper aimed to outline and characterize the forms of silence in culture using the ontological approach, which reveals the fundamental principles of being in silence in the context of modern culture. The novelty of this research lies in studying the phenomenon of silence with its multiple-aspect being and interpretation. Silence is analysed here not only as a problem of cultural being, but also as a metaphor. The theoretical value of this study consists in the author’s raising and solving the problem of silence as a metaphor and its existence within different contexts (philosophical, linguistic, aesthetic, religious, and others). The author determined the theoretical aspect of silence from the standpoint of culture and philosophy, emphasizing the forms of silence in culture (pause, reserve, and metaphysical silence). The findings and the approach used by the author are of practical value for philosophical, aesthetic, and art studies, which direct the development thrusts of modern culture and art. This research identified the following aspects of the problem of silence: ontological nature of the forms of silence; the content of the metaphor of silence in culture; the role of the cultural context in determining the specific features of the metaphor of silence. These features consist in the processual nature of modern culture, facing the static and finalized understanding of being. In conclusion, the author determined the eventfulness of the metaphor of silence. The paper points out that silence discloses the dialogical nature of the relationship between the person and the world, accentuating metaphoricalness as an unfinished state and openness of silence as well as revealing the incompleteness of sense as an incompleteness of human existence.
