Abstract

A brief acquaintance with monolingual and bilingual dictionaries covering lexical and phraseological units in the sphere of economy, banking, management, business, finance, audit, etc. is enough to understand that, quite often, the terms in dictionary entries are not just word combinations, but set expressions with wholly or partially transferred meaning, i.e. inherently they are phraseological units. However, not all dictionaries observe the rules of differentiation between phraseological units proper, on the one hand, and set or phraseomatic expressions, on the other. This error is especially characteristic of the English-Russian Dictionary on Accounting, Audit and Finance compiled by D.Yu. Terekhov, which is the object of this research. The paper studied if the set expressions had transferred meanings. The research is based on A.V. Kunin’s phraseological concept and his method of phraseological identification. It proceeds from the semantic classification of phraseological units suggested by V.V. Vinogradov. The paper also resorts to the semantic analysis of stable units given in the dictionary entries using the method of definitions. This way the author identifies their linguistic status and then suggests that D.Yu. Terekhov should rearrange the structure of the dictionary entries accordingly. That is, a dictionary entry should include at least three parts: a) for variable word combinations, b) for set phrases, and c) for phraseological units. In the latter group, however, it is important to differentiate between phraseological fusions, phraseological unities and phraseological collocations, as it will raise the dictionary’s theoretical level and improve its communicative and pragmatic value.
