Abstract

This article dwells on the contribution of the French writer and diplomat Eugѐne-Melchior de Vogüé (1848‒1910), author of the book The Russian Novel (1886), which has not yet been fully translated into Russian, in the understanding of Russian culture and literature in the West. The article aimed to determine his place in Western discourse about Russia and his role in the formation of the image of Russia in Western literary consciousness. The value of this research stems from the current importance for the humanities and culture of the problems of reception of the Other and intercultural dialogue. In terms of practical value, the paper studies the mechanisms and patterns of intercultural communication, develops demythologization techniques for Western notions about the Other, and reveals those ideologemes through which the West perceives Russia and the Slavic world. Vogüé introduced the theme of historical prospects of the Slavs into the new context and interpreted it using the categories of the decline of the West. He contrasted Western decadence with the vitality of the young “Slavic race”. Keeping in line with the so-called superiority complex towards the Slavs, typical of Western discourse, Vogüé at the same time felt a moral and historical dynamism of the Slavic people seeking for new ideals and forms of life. Singling out mysticism as a dominant feature of the “Russian soul” and contrasting it with Western rationalism, Vogüé saw both its positive and negative consequences. For the first time in Western discourse, one of the Slavic literatures (Russian) was, in certain respects, recognized as a model for Western literature.
