Abstract

This paper deals with the formation of the worldview space during the Middle Ages and the Modern era. The subject of the research is the relationship between the mystical and the rational (faith and reason) within the framework of European ontological epistemology. Guided by the heritage of patristics as well as philosophical, anthropological and historical studies of Russian and foreign thinkers, the author reconstructs ontoepistemological searches from antiquity to the Age of Enlightenment centred around the doctrine of the Logos. Pointing out the abundance of subject reflections on this topic, the author notes that the existing conceptions are disintegrated and epistemologically limited. In particular, taking the doctrine of Christ the Logos as an example and using the method of interdisciplinary analytical comparative studies, the author not only demonstrates the possibility of exceeding the bounds of the centre of mystical and rational transformations of the antique heritage and new European searches, but also describes a whole range of subsequent traditions, including modern ones (such as rationalism and hermeticism). The historical context covering the Middle Ages is primarily focused on the periods of patristics and Reformation. The study of patristic heritage helps us to highlight key points of the semantic dominants of the doctrine of the Logos, as well as to track the subsequent peripheral vectors of the doctrine. The critical review of the Reformation period allows us to draw a conclusion about the prevalence of the religious claim of the supporters of the “conservative revolution”, which played a crucial role in the establishment of the new episteme. This article aimed to describe the special features of the concepts of the Logos, analyse the influence of the doctrine of the Logos on the formation of the new European scientific knowledge, as well as identify and study peripheral phenomena of the epistemological mainstream (hermeticism and occultism).
