Abstract

Based on the analysis of written sources and archaeological finds, as well as works of various researchers, this article traces the appearance in North-Western Siberia of imported utilitarian and aesthetic objects originating in Central Asia and Volga Bulgaria. The authors present the most complete (as of today) selection of status objects, including toreutics, found on the territory under consideration and georeferenced to specific monuments. An attempt is made to trace the penetration route of Oriental products into North-Western Siberia. The results of object mapping show an activation of trade contacts. At the same time, we can observe a clear trend towards marking the main routes over the Urals with the treasures including these objects, as had been pointed out by researchers earlier. The paper suggests that the nature of these trade contacts between the inhabitants of North- Eastern Siberia and Central Asia and Volga Bulgaria indicates the existence of a dialogue of cultures. Special attention is given here to the subsequent use of the imported products by the Ugric and Samoyed peoples. Considering the concentration of Arab and Bulgarian items and the presence of objects known only in the Lower Ob River area, as well as the chronological framework of the distribution of goods from Central Asia and Volga Bulgaria, we can infer that Muslim merchants discovered the distant north-eastern markets. According to the authors, the exchange of goods with Central Asia stopped due to the establishment of the Ulus of Jochi, which took full control over the Volga-Kama trade route, and later, due to the ban imposed by the Russian authorities in the early 17th century.
