Abstract

The study of language and society – sociolinguistics – not only deals with language functioning, but also studies its vitality and develops recommendations that should be reflected in a region’s or a country’s language policy. In this regard, sociolinguistics is presented here primarily as a study of functioning of national languages, as its many other issues have been addressed by independent linguistic fields of study: gender linguistics, developmental linguistics, theory of cross-cultural communication, communication linguistics, linguistic personology, and cultural linguistics. Having analysed the existing schools of thought and work of higher educational institutions, as well as ongoing research, including defended theses, the author of this paper revealed the current state of Russian sociolinguistics. The results indicate that Russian sociolinguistics has fallen on hard times. However, sociolinguistic research is a priority for the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, according to the national targets for 2015–2017. The results of this study can be used in linguistics courses, special courses in regional linguistics and theory of bilingualism, as well as in official documents, such as programmes on language policy implementation. The author sees prospects for further research into such key concepts of sociolinguistics as language situation, linguistic condition, bi(multi)lingualism, natural bilingualism, and language policy.
