Abstract

This paper aimed to study zoomorphic phraseological units of three unrelated languages – English, Russian and Kazakh – and single out types of morphological variants within this phraseological framework. These languages were chosen due to the pragmatic tasks of teaching foreign languages to Kazakh students. We chose zoomorphic phraseological units for our research as they are well represented in the languages under study. The paper is based on A.V. Kunin’s phraseological theory and his method of phraseological identification, as well as on the typological theory put forward by V.D. Arakin. Our research confirms the initial hypothesis about morphological variability of phraseological units in the languages under consideration. We identified a number of morphological variants of different types among the phraseological units under study. In addition, some universal and specific characteristics of morphological variability of these phraseological units in the three languages were revealed. The performed analysis allows us to give morphological variability of phraseological units the linguistic status of phraseological universal. Moreover, we find it possible to categorize it as an elementary static universal, which constitutes the novelty of this research. The theoretical importance of this paper consists, firstly, in identification of the new linguistic universal, namely morphological variability of phraseological units representing an elementary static universal, and, secondly, in determination of a number of isomorphic characteristics of the phraseological units under study. In practice, this paper can be used to develop programmes for courses of lectures and special courses on English, Russian and Kazakh phraseology as well as on comparative typology of Germanic, Turkic and Slavic languages.
