Abstract

This article analysed some of the oldest objects of civil architecture in Yeniseysk to study the problem of dating cultural heritage sites in Siberia. Today we can observe a crisis of the traditional approach to the cultural, historical and architectural evaluation of wooden objects under state protection. Often they have rather conventional construction dates; while accurate dating allows us to in detail reconstruct the town-planning history of Siberian settlements (identify the stages of area development and related events, the tradition of using certain architectural techniques, etc.). It also, to a large extent, determines the cultural significance of such buildings. To solve this problem the author used a multidisciplinary approach comparing the historical, architectural and dendrochronological data. In our case, this comprehensive analysis made it possible to for the first time determine precisely the construction period of five cultural heritage sites in Yeniseysk. The comparative analysis of historical, architectural and dendrochronological data revealed in three cases discrepancies from one to three decades and determined more accurately the construction date of two monuments. The results clearly demonstrate the advantages of this comprehensive historical, architectural and dendrochronological approach to the study of wooden architecture monuments. The paper shows that the buildings under consideration are among the earliest objects of urban wooden architecture in Eastern Siberia that have survived to this day, thus inspiring further study of the architectural and archaeological sites of Yeniseysk.
