Abstract

Archpriest Avvakum (1620/1621–1682) is one of the most prominent persons in Russian history, a man of great spiritual strength and a brilliant writer of Medieval Russia. His works, the most famous one being The Life, focus on the living folk language with its simplicity and sincerity of expression. This paper dwells on non-standard spoken geographical words in the Old Russian language represented in Avvakum’ s texts by numerous names of landscape elements and toponyms. Among proper geographical names we find variants that existed in the folk speech of the 17th century: Nizhny, meaning Nizhny Novgorod, Baikalovo Sea (Lake Baikal), Daury (Dauria) and others. The paper also looks at ecclesiastical names, such as Nikola, which is a variant of Saint Nicholas. Appellative geographical terms in Avvakum’s work are mainly presented by words used in the rest of Russia. Local words are typically used in the description of the places new to the archpriest, mainly those related to his exiles. The author analysed the folk names of places in the river: zalavok (actually, a long chest used as a bench) and vorota (gates); their usual meanings provide an accurate description of real parts of the Angara River. Folk geographical terms help Avvakum present a vivid image of the landscape. The toponyms actively used by the archpriest allow us to relate the created images with particular geographical places, while their exact descriptions are contained in the usual meanings.
