Abstract

This paper is based on theoretical and methodological propositions of the research line called “new biographical history”. The article investigates the process of worldview formation of the Narodnik historian and social activist V.I. Semevsky on the basis of his teacher V.I. Vodovozov’s historical biography written by V.I. Semevsky. The article covers a wide range of sources of personal origin. It describes the process of genesis and evolution of the relations between V.I. Semevsky and V.I. Vodovozov. This allows us to depict personal, or individual, experience in the context of sociocultural reality of the post-reform period and to understand what concepts, ideas and opinions determined the everyday conduct of a person. The paper examines the teacher’s and the student’s vision of the ways of Russia’s historical development. Further, it presents comparative characteristics of their standpoints on self-education of Russian intelligentsia, the role of the youth movement in the 1860s – 1870s, and the woman question in Russia during the post-reform period. In addition, the article reveals Vodovozov’s and Semevsky’s attitude toward such a phenomenon of spiritual life as nihilism. The comparative historical analysis of their viewpoints shows that Semevsky had adopted his teacher V.I. Vodovozov’s system of values. A conclusion is made that V.I. Semevsky’s biographical sketch dedicated to the life and work of V.I. Vodovozov is a kind of his own inner biography symbolizing the culmination of his socialization process which in the end formed his key moral, ethical and political values.
