Abstract

This article’s central claim is the relevance of comparative literary studies today and their value for literature analysis. This involves revealing common and specific features of literary portraits. The paper focuses on the comparative analysis of two characters: G. Flaubert’s Emma Bovary and F. Mauriac’s Thérèse Desqueyroux. The author suggests a uniform comparative approach to literary image analysis. The character’s image is a unique combination of such characteristics as his looks, professional, social and family status, moral principles, psychological and emotional state and his temper. Different means of characterization work through each other and determine each other because they are elements of one system. Every element of literary portrait is meaningful and functionally significant in the novel and the author’s system of stylistic means and images in general. The researcher’s aim is to reveal the peculiarities of a literary portrait determined by the author’s choice. It’s essential to understand that the character representation depends on the writer’s aesthetic credo, his/her outlook, life experience and personality. On the other hand the author’s choice is determined by the epoch he/she lives in and the aesthetic trend the author belongs to.
