Abstract

The paper analyses the role of the Union of Italian Women and the Antifascist Committee of Soviet Women in the establishment and maintenance of diplomatic, economic and cultural ties between Italy and the Soviet Union during 1946–1956. Among the main reasons for the establishment of strong contacts between the women’s organisations, the author singles out the following: positive emotional perception of Soviet politics, the view of the Soviet society as the most progressive in the world, and greater role of left-wing political parties, communists and socialists, which adhered to the joint action pact after the war. The paper explores such forms of interaction between the women’s organisations as the exchange of delegations, which allowed the Italian women to solve one of the most acute problems of Soviet-Italian relations – repatriation of Italian prisoners of war, as well as exchange work experience and resolve mother and child issues. Among other forms of cooperation we can name campaigns of friendship, presenting Soviet Culture to the Italians through photo exhibitions, Soviet documentaries and music; collaboration in the course of world congresses of women and within the Peace Movement; exchange of telegrams and so-called messages of friendship, which for the Italians were an indicator of the international status of the national women’s movement. Moreover, the Antifascist Committee of Soviet Women sponsored acts of charity of the Union of Italian Women, as in the case of the flood of 1951 in northern Italy. In conclusion, the author considers the influence of the Hungarian events of 1956 on the relationship between the communist parties and between the women’s organisations of the two countries.
