Abstract

Based on the ethnopedagogical ideas in the Arkhangelsk North and Sweden in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the article has systematized the general and specific features of the popular ideal of northern woman. A popular ideal is a system of personality-based requirements developing from generation to generation. Through education and upbringing, the popular ideal of northern woman accumulated folk culture and traditions. A northern woman embodied the spiritual basis of the family and the kin; she was the bearer of traditional upbringing. The main traits of this popular ideal were: purity, honour, sense of freedom and independence, responsibility, ability to sacrifice herself and protect the hearth and home, devotion to family traditions, diligence and ingenuity. This ideal was of great educational importance as it served a role model for girls in terms of behaviour and morals, which form the basis of human relations. Moreover, it helped preserve key universal values, such as homeland, human, labour, love and family. The authors point out that an essential feature of this popular ideal was the moral principle embodying Christian virtues – love, compassion, patience, respect and reverence for one’s neighbour, cheerful attitude to life, etc. – and ideas of humanism, awareness of each person’s uniqueness. Identifying the peculiarities of the popular ideal of northern woman is essential in terms of understanding and actualizing the educational potential of its moral values, such as the importance of family, one’s moral qualities, knowledge and labour, honesty and collectivism as the key principles of interpersonal relationships.
