Abstract

The paper highlights the complex, contradictory and multifaceted nature of the issue of assessing the role of games in a person’s life. We believe that the game phenomenon requires a comprehensive study applying a variety of scientific theories and concepts, i.e. a multiparadigmatic research. game is a specific type of activity, a social means by which a person masters the world of the surrounding objects and social relations and assumes the resources of the environment. We look at the concept of activity from the philosophical point of view and single out key types of activity: a) activities of concrete, “technological” nature; b) activities that are invariant with respect to the first type; they ensure the efficiency of actions in various spheres of human life. The article presents the concept of natural and man-made games. We recommend using games for the development of research skills and point out that games and research activity have freedom of imagination in common. The paper lists the following functions of games being part of the university education: educational, socially orienting, organizational, stimulating, communicative, remedial, reflective, teaching, developing, and stimulating the person’s self-development. One of the advantages of games is that they offer plenty of opportunities to evaluate, develop, form and correct the general and professional skills of specialists-to-be. In addition, we provide insights into the importance of teaching and business games as well as identify the teaching conditions for the use of business games at universities. Separately the paper examines the role and importance of sports games in the moral education of students.
