Abstract

The article presents an overview of the certification processes for logging and wood processing enterprises, as well as shows the certification dynamics of forest management and supply chain. The main factors affecting certification processes are: maintenance and expansion of forest product markets, growing prices for certified products, pursuit of sustainable forest management. Using the example of OJSC Solombala Sawmill and Woodworking Plant, we show how their priorities change in line with the development of forest certification. In addition, the paper dwells on the types of certification costs, including preparation services, certification audits, sorting out high conservation value forests, research of flora and fauna, monitoring the conservation of rare and endangered plant and animal species, as well as other costs required to objectively assess cost efficiency of such certification. Moreover, certification of woodland holding has to be approved by the parties concerned. The paper evaluated the cost per unit for the certification of the supply chain of OJSC Solombala Sawmill and Woodworking Plant and forest management certification of two logging companies: JSC Svetlozerskles and LLC Toymales. In assessing the cost per unit, we take a 5-year period which includes the entire certification process (preparation, pre-audit, main audit, annual control audit, etc.) and takes into account all the actual expenses for the certification process in forest management and supply chain. We come to the conclusion that a timber holding can reduce its cost per unit by increasing the proportion of certified raw material suppliers.
