Abstract

The paper studies the specific character of friendship as a phenomenon of dialogic identity. Friendship as a philosophical-anthropological category is analyzed as a source of one of the basic sources of existential and moral experience. The author examines the specific character of dialogic identity as a phenomenon of self-differentiation. The concept of dialogue is treated as a fundamental principle of personal relationships, particularly as the principle of friendship. In this type of relationship, individuals remain their own selves but at the same time enrich one another. The concept of dialogue allows us to reveal the inner dimensions of friendship as a way of personal self-actualization based on a special existential and moral activity. The author distinguishes between friendship in a narrow sense (as a spiritual community of people) and friendship in a broader sense (as any communication and community of people in general that is valuable in itself). The author dwells on the issue of alter ego as a person’s double. The concept of Thou in its metaphysical sense is seen as a key to this problem; thus the phenomenon of existential openness (being as “I‑Thou” relationship) is interpreted here as an intersubjective process of forming a personal being. Special attention is given to the interpretation of the “inner mechanisms” of a person’s moral activity as a phenomenon of behaviour according to the “dominant in the face of the Other”. The phenomenon of existential openness is seen as a basic motif of friendship. The author turns to P. Florensky’s interpretation of friendship, in particular to his concept of friendship as an existential antinomy. In addition, the author suggests a concept of various historical types of friendship and the concept of key psychological components of friendship. As a result of the analysis, friendship is generally viewed as a particularly exposed dialogical “I-Thou” relationship, which is the most important form of spiritual experience, forming and developing self-knowledge and the ability to change oneself.
