Abstract

The article analyzes the history of administrative and territorial division of the European North of Russia in the 20th–21st century. A conclusion is made that the more the northern regions were consolidated, the more successful the development of the Arctic territories was. In the new phase of the Arctic exploration, the author considers it necessary to form either a Northern Federal District within the Northern Economic Region, or a Dvino-Pechorsky Krai within the Arkhangelsk Region, Komi Republic and Nenets Autonomous District.
