Abstract

This article studies the relationship between ontology and epistemology in terms of formulating and solving the fundamental question of philosophy. Further, it reveals the contradictory character of ontological epistemology as a cause of problems in the relationship between ontology and epistemology. Section I shows implicit interaction in Parmenides’ doctrine of being and explicit interaction in F. Engels’ works. The author of this paper argues that at the core of this area of interaction lies the study of basic opposites of any worldview, including philosophical worldview: the universe and the human, being and cognition, matter and consciousness, objective and subjective. Section II demonstrates that the search in the history of philosophy and modern literature has resulted in attempts to solve the problem of mutual influence between ontology and epistemology in terms of “syncretism” in the mythological worldview, in the form of “third line” of philosophy in the philosophy proper, and in the form of “common sense” in ordinary consciousness. Section III explains that going beyond syncretism in the interpretation of the relationship between ontology and epistemology leads to three options: dualism, opposite variants of reductionism, and a dialectical model presenting their interconnection based on the law of unity and struggle of opposites, which reveals their inward nature and the deriving from their entities relationship. The author utilizes the dialectical method of investigation, using the principles of objectivity, consistency and unity of the historical and the logical.
