Abstract

This paper presents a paradigmatic analysis of the research into the phenomenon of utopia conducted by Russian authors from 2005 to 2016. Monitoring of the information field has shown that over the past decade Russia has hosted five major international academic events dealing with the issues related to utopias, their derivatives, and utopianism. Three conferences organized by Russian and foreign scholars have been held abroad (France, Switzerland and Ukraine). Nine monographs have been published and more than 20 theses defended. The scholars have been studying various aspects of both utopia and its manifestations. Based on the analysis of their research, the following conclusions were made: new methodological approaches to the analysis of the phenomenon of utopia have appeared; the phenomenon of utopia has acquired new meanings and characteristics in virtual reality; utopian ideas and storylines have been increasingly used by philosophy and cinematography. The term “utopia” has found completely new and unexpected areas of application. It should be noted that the use of utopian potential is the key issue of academic research today. However, in spite of the large number of studies on utopia published in Russia, our scholars remain poorly integrated into the international academic environment. This is a regrettable fact, as their works are of great interest and importance and could be useful to the international community within the cooperation with The Society for Utopian Studies and the Utopian Studies Society, as well as participation in conferences of the Utopian Studies Society, and discussions on the pages of the journal Utopia and Utopianism.
