Abstract

Studying the problem of structuring and modelling of phraseological units (PU) is one of the main trends in the research on the phraseology of Germanic languages, which perfectly fits into the set of modern linguistic paradigms: structural-semantic, anthropological, culturological, country-specific and communicative. Phraseological studies in the aspect of structural modelling are needed to overcome discretization of linguistic data in this sphere and their quantitative lacunas with the view of creating a typological passport of phraseology of a certain language. This paper aimed to (a) study the nature of grammatical (one-dimensional) structuring of verbal PUs of modern English with the give component and those of modern Russian with the da(va)t’ component in the comparative aspect; (b) identify rows of the most productive one-dimensional models in the chosen part of verbal phraseology of both languages; (c) describe their main characteristics, i.e. type of dependence of the components and degree of PU stability; and (d) determine the quantitative and percentage ratio of PUs based on a certain one-dimensional model in English and Russian. The analysis, which was carried out on the basis of A.V. Kunin’s phraseological concept and V.D. Arakin’s typological concept, shows that the most productive one-dimensional models of verbal PUs in modern English and Russian with the give / da(va)t’ component are two-component and three-component one-dimensional structures, which include three quarters of the studied phraseological units. The main conclusion of the research is as follows: the brief syntagmatic organization of phraseological units of productive models in English and Russian, as well as their average degree of stability and structural parallelism show that this part of phraseology in the languages under study is of isomorphic nature.
