Abstract

This article investigates the practice of using “Russian” titles and “Russian” terms when a new political and spiritual centre was forming in North-Eastern Rus’ in the second half of the 13th and 14th centuries. Terminology itself is a reflection of an era and can help clarify many of the social and historical phenomena. Studying the dynamics of changes in “Russian” terms and titles during the establishment of new social relations allows us to see hidden trends and patterns of this process. Self-identification with the Russians and Rus’ became common among the population of the once united Russian State in the second half of the 13th and early 14th centuries. This conclusion is largely predetermined by the changes in the overall geopolitical situation caused by the Tartar and Mongol invasion and Rus’ acute confrontation with its western neighbours: Catholic orders, Hungary, Lithuania, and Poland. During those years, a narrow understanding of Rus’ as a territory with the Russian population in the Middle Dnieper area was gradually broadened and the word Rus’ was increasingly associated with the Grand Duchy of Vladimir. The author analysed the following names: Russian Land, Rus’, Little Rus’, Great Rus’, The Whole Russian Land, Metropolitan of All Rus’, Grand Prince of All Rus’, and Russian Princes. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between the concepts of Russian and Orthodox. The work excludes colour-related terminology (White Rus’, Red Rus’, etc.) as, due to their specific character, they require a separate study.
