Abstract

In the author’s translation typology texts are divided into four groups with reference to five relevant criteria: communicative task, type of information, the source, the recipient, degree of translability. This typology is to be used in choosing the translation strategy understood broadly as a set of the text’s dominant features. This set of dominant features allows to predict frequent mistakes in the translated text. The mistakes are analyzed in two text types: an instruction and a publicistic article. The appearance of theories of text in recent years, in particular the linguistics of the text and textual typology, had a whole range of fruitful consequences for the development of translation studies: it led to communicative linguistics moving to a new stage of development, which in its turn made it possible to create a communicative model of translation on the level of the text; it stimulated attempts to create textual typologies focused on translation; it made it possible to develop a mechanism of a special applied area of linguistic analysis of the text focused on translation; it laid the foundation for the concept of “translation strategy”, and the development of translation strategies in translating various texts; it served as the basis for developing a systemic didactic model, giving a theoretical foundation to translator training; it prepared the theoretical bases for developing objective criteria for translation quality evaluation.
