Abstract

The article presents a theoretical and methodological approach to the study of maritime heritage of the Russian North. The essence of socio-philosophical analysis of the issue is addressed. The role of maritime heritage in the modern sociocultural paradigm of the Russian North is revealed. The paper describes the essence and the socio-philosophical meaning of the concept of sociocultural space of the Russian North from the maritime standpoint. Space is considered in this article as a metasystem which, along with the geographical concept of the marine, island and coastal, includes the synthesized and evolutionary value-semantic content of the territory called Russian North. Maritime culture is defined here as an initial structure cell in the analysis of maritime heritage as a whole. Further, the paper dwells on the content and relevance of the historically established phenomenon of maritime heritage in contemporary Russia. Maritime culture and maritime heritage as a whole are presented in this article as a particularly pronounced sociocultural substance that gradually formed the Russian North over various historical periods of the country’s development. Maritime heritage is understood as one of the value bases forming the socio-philosophical choice in the modernization of contemporary Russia. It is noteworthy that maritime heritage has time and again been discussed by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, but the resulting documents serve only as guidelines urging to use special academic knowledge. From this perspective, the author attempts to include the research of maritime heritage into the socio-philosophical discourse. These conclusions are in tune with the essence of government programs and research and education as well as socioeconomic spheres aimed to develop coastal areas of Russia.
