Abstract

This article examines the impact of globalization processes on the education space of the Russian province in terms of teaching traditional religious culture. The author analysed the underlying factors for the Russian regions’ including in the general education the study of history and culture of Orthodox Christianity as the largest traditional religion. Further, the author looked at the consequences of the state policy on education in the 1990s, in particular its de-ideologization and depoliticization as well as giving up moral education at school, and how these changes affected school education. Taking Central Russia (Bryansk, Kostroma, Kursk, Smolensk and other regions) as an example, the author demonstrates how the process of teaching traditional religious culture within general education was organized at the turn of the 21st century, including the regional regulatory and legal framework, teaching forms and methods, etc. The extensive factual material illustrates that the practice of teaching Orthodox culture in Russian schools is becoming more widespread. In addition, the paper provides insights into the regional approaches to the structure of school education aiming to restore the national cultural component as well as cultural and historical traditions and opposing the negative effects of globalization. Considerable attention is given here to the analysis of the debates around courses in Orthodox culture teaching. Further, the author considers the establishment of a new discipline – a comprehensive training course “Fundamentals of religious cultures and secular ethics” – in the Russian education system. The findings indicate that such an expanding practice of teaching traditional religious culture in the far reaches of Russia at the turn of the 21st century was a response to the great challenge of our time – globalization – which, if followed blindly, threatens cultural mixing, loss of national identity and weaker effects of moral education on schoolchildren. Therefore, this regional practice has become a platform which, at the end of the first decade of the 21st century, contributed to the acknowledgment of teaching traditional religions as a significant component of spiritual and moral education of the younger generation.
