Abstract

The paper analyses the historical experience and lessons of the First World War and Russian revolutions of 1917, discovers the role of this war for the development of the revolutionary process in Russia and in the world, as well as for the crisis continuum, uncovers the interrelation of history and politics in understanding the processes a century from the present. The latest publications and contemporary research approaches to these complex historical and political issues are named and evaluated in the article. The author describes key international academic publishing projects covering the period from the 1910s to the early 1920s and Russia’s crisis continuum. These projects will be based on new archival documents, innovative research methods and reconceptualization of key problems of that period. Further, the article provides insights into some polemic issues of the Great War, such as its origins and consequences, as well as points out the countries held responsible for unleashing it. In addition, the paper dwells on the forum in the American journal Kritika on the forthcoming 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution of 1917 and key items of its research agenda. The author analyses the prospects of studying the Russian revolutionary process considering the attitude of contemporary Russian establishment to it. The paper highlights the importance of studying the history of the Russian Revolution and its results on the historical scale as well as in the context of comparative revolutionary studies and global history. The article also covers the concept of centennial revolution in Russia as well as the interrelation and dialectics of revolution and modernization. Contemporary processes in the global world, threats, challenges and risks to the human civilization in the 21st century are evaluated in the context of the history a century from the present and its lessons. The importance of critical evaluation of historical experience for the current global politics is stressed.
