Abstract

One of the most important issues in psychology today is professional identity, underlying the future success of one’s professional activity. Most researchers agree that professional identity is a product of personal and professional development over a long period of time depending on a number of conditions. At the same time, professional identity is seen as an integral concept conveying the relationship between cognitive, motivational and value characteristics which help to choose a profession and realize one’s personal potential in his/her work to the fullest extent. One of the most important characteristics are the value ones. The value system determines a person’s orientation and forms the basis for his/her relationships, principles, and meaning of life. The development of a person’s value orientations determines his/her attitude to him/herself and the world around, urges the person to be more active as well as determines his/her behaviour and the choice of activity. This paper lists key value orientations of railway technical school students. At this stage of life, one’s value paradigms form a certain system of values used by each student in choosing his/her behaviour, which, in its turn, contributes to the student’s professional development. The respondents highly appreciate the following values: health, communication with others, financial security, and love. The author found that students of all years of study mention universal values, while first- and second-year students name the values typical of young age. Third-year students are more self-reliant, responsible and able to achieve both professional and personal goals, that is why on top of their list we find fulfilment in life – not only in their work.
