Abstract

This paper provides basic information about conservation strategies in the 20th and 21st centuries and proves that environmental factors should be taken into consideration in the course of socioeconomic development. International environmental documents are listed in chronological order. The author studies the emergence of the term sustainable development, meaning the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Further the author looks at the attitudes towards environmental responsibility in today’s Russia. The concepts of environmental sustainability and environmental stability are seen as synonymous. The quantitative level of this sustainability is reflected in the Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI). Environmental sustainability is only a part of the coordinated development of the entire system and is inferior to environmental development. Environmental development of the productive forces of man and nature has to be controlled. The meaning of the phrase environmental development is considered and its use in Soviet literature is analyzed. Environmental development is hardly mentioned in the literature on environmental economics, as well as on ecology but can be found in the literature on eco-tourism, ecology and law and is often used in relation to environmental education. Recently there have appeared such terms as environmental development of society and environmental development of a person. The author of this paper suggests his own definition of sustainable environmental development of an organization and analyzes sustainable development assessment methodologies.
