Abstract

Recently, the term “discourse” has been used in various spheres of modern science. Such an interest allows us to describe this phenomenon from different points of view and better understand it. The author of this paper turns to the concept of discourse as it reflects the cultural characteristics of a linguistic community, namely, how its representatives see the world (their worldview). In the article, peculiarities of the African American version of political discourse are analyzed using M.L. King’s speech “I Have a Dream” and the following concepts which make up the worldview are singled out: “African American Dream”, “Freedom”, and “Struggle”. The key unit of a worldview is the concept, incorporating all the information about any object or phenomenon. It is expressed in a language; that is why a profound verbal analysis is needed in order to restore it. The concept “African American Dream” differs from the well-known “American Dream” and becomes the key component of the African American worldview as it renders what this people has been striving for. The African-American Dream is represented here as it was understood at the time of the civil rights movement in the United States, when M.L. King, Jr first announced its existence. In addition, the paper analyzes the verbal means used to describe this new concept in American history.
