Abstract

The focus of this article is politeness and impoliteness in English address within the framework of linguistic ecology – a new paradigm of linguistics studying the interaction between any language and its environment. We argue that politeness is wider and more complicated that etiquette. Nowadays, linguists are interested in politeness theory as it plays an important role in interaction. The paper examines politeness theory notions introduced in the papers by P. Grice and G. Leech. Further, we give definitions of politeness, impoliteness and linguistic ecology. As a matter of fact, in terms of linguistic ecology polite address does not necessarily mean that the speaker is being polite to the addressee. We critically review the role of the addressee and observer in identifying ecological and non-ecological address. The manner of address can be studied in terms of positive and negative politeness strategies. We argue that during the interaction, interlocutors often have different perceptions of politeness standards, therefore some polite address patterns seem to be inappropriate for them. We give a definition of ecological and nonecological address to a communication partner. Polite and impolite address in terms of linguistic ecology are cited from the works by English authors of different periods: W. Congreve, M. Spark, R. Chance.
