Abstract

The article is devoted to investigating the peculiarities of phraseological nicknames of well-known public and political figures of Great Britain, the USA and Germany. The author underlines the importance of this research due to the lack of a detailed investigation into the specific character of nicknames of political figures in the English and German languages. Nicknames are defined in the article from the point of view of well-known scholars. The history of the study of proper names is described from the standpoint of prominent researchers. It is also emphasized here that the proper name is closely linked with the subdivision of concepts into general and individual. It is noted that phraseological nicknames belong to the class of individual anthroponyms that are used to express individual concepts. Using the quantitative data obtained the author determined the place of phraseological nicknames in German and English and analysed their properties, which allows us to include nicknames into the phraseological fund of the English and German languages. Further, the paper explains the reasons for the appearance and existence of phraseological nicknames of political figures. Personal phraseological units are characterized from the point of view of syntactic stability of their constituents. The degree of reinterpretation of these constituents in the two languages is analysed; key ways of reconsideration in personal phraseological units are determined. In addition, the paper studies phraseological nicknames with completely reinterpreted, partly reinterpreted, and complicated meaning of their constituents. The article points out nominative signs serving as the basis for nomination in personal phraseological units. Moreover, the author singled out and analysed personal phraseological units describing the character and appearance of a person and those naming a person on the basis of his/her mental abilities, physical strength and endurance, and his/her contribution to or participation in a certain event. In conclusion, a quantitative correlation between the investigated groups of phraseological nicknames is shown.
