Abstract

Spiritual and intellectual potential is the real and effective power helping us to solve state, social, political and economic problems. One of the central issues that have in recent years been debated by researchers is the fate of folk culture and art of the Russian North, the real and imaginary ideals and spiritual values. Up to date, much has already been done not only to preserve, but also to multiply the traditions of folk culture and arts in the North. A number of exhibitions of folk artists have been arranged in Arkhangelsk and Severodvinsk. Cultural figures of Kargopol region organize traditional Festivals of Folk Masters of Russia held annually in Kargopol, one of the recognized centres of folk culture and crafts in the Russian North. It was here, in creative cooperation with the local teachers college and district administration, that three conferences were held: “Culture of Kargopol: Traditions and Modernity”, “Preservation and Revival of Folk Crafts”, and “Circle of Crafts”. The overall objective of researchers, cultural figures and craftsmen is to make sure that the finest specimen of folk culture and art are preserved and multiplied for generations to come, that they are not just museum pieces, but a spiritual foundation for modern culture and morality.
