Abstract

This paper is devoted to the problem of autonomous learning in the modern higher education
institution. It analyzes the terminology related to autonomous learning and learner autonomy and studies
various approaches to implementing this type of learning in Russian and foreign pedagogy. On the one
hand, autonomous learning is a way to organize students’ self-directed learning outside the classroom,
and on the other hand, it is their capacity for reflection and self-management. The paper emphasizes
that such learning can be both mass and distance one. Autonomous learning can also be regarded as a
specific system of academic activity arrangement based on self-directed learning skills.
