Abstract

The paper analyzes modern theories of social movements in terms of forming protest feelings and managing social protest and points out strengths and weaknesses of their practical application. The use of these theories in “revolt technologies” of the early 21st century and the fragmentary character of representation of social movement theories in Russian literature prove this subject to be relevant. The paper examines the sources of the theory of social movements, the new theory of social movements, the theory of resource mobilization, etc. in the works by the sociologists of the early 20th century V. Pareto and R. Michels. Further, the paper studies the emergence of the theory of social movements in the late 1960s, its development and transformations for the next four decades. In the 1970s such a keen interest was caused by attempts to explain modern social movements: student protests in the 1960s, various movements for the rights of African Americans, for the civil rights, as well as feminist and youth protest movements. The basic principle of the new approach lies in the fact that social movements have become the main social forms accumulating social protest in modern societies. The theories and concepts under study have rid the society of the fear of destructive revolts by considering social movements as an integral part of any political system, having its own functions and being rationally analyzable.
