Abstract

The term innovation is perceived by the academic community as rather ambiguous. The paper
dwells on the genesis of this notion and analyzes some synonymous concepts, such as invention,
discovery and novelty. Basic parameters defining innovative nature of an activity are presented. Using
these parameters, the author describes the evidential base for recognizing the system of additional
lifelong learning developed on the platform of the classical Vitus Bering Kamchatka State University as
an innovative system. This innovative system includes the following: innovative products, mechanisms
and elements. The most innovative elements of the system of additional lifelong learning are the Family
Development Centre and the Students’ Projects Laboratory.
