Abstract

The article focuses on French indefinite pronouns, determiners and adverbs that have a composite
structure, especially those containing a verb, such as n’importe quoi, je ne sais quel. The author’s
objective is to describe the semantics of these units and to determine their status in the system of
indefinite forms in the modern French language. The analysis is based on fiction and scientific texts
created in the 20th and 21st centuries, though an element of historic analysis is involved as well. The
research allows to classify these elements as analytical units as they are characterized, on the one hand,
by the unity of the meaning and, on the other hand, by the presence of synthetic oppositive member.
