Abstract

The article is devoted to the philosophical and historical understanding of the Romanov dynasty on
the basis of the model of family-generic integrity of a person, which is understood as a functional unity
of five generations on a family tree that are necessary for its natural and spiritual rooting and thereby its
preservation. This is the first time the principle of integrity is applied, i.e., a supra-historical sociocultural
archetype in the form of symbolic image of transcendence is introduced into the practice of historical and genealogical research. This archetype defines the worldview, the system of traditional values and
orientation of the person’s activity. The above model applied to the ahnentafel of the ruling Romanov
dynasty allowed us to cast light on a number of points. Firstly, it enabled us to choose a criterion to
assess their role in the destiny of Russia as much independent of political demands of that time as
possible. In other words, we could establish in what way or whether the state activity of each generation
contributed to preserving the country’s social being. Secondly, we showed how the regularities and
peculiarities of the development of their family tree influenced the history of the Russian civilization
throughout the 17th – early 20th centuries. Thirdly, we were able to correlate the objective regularities
of the system of formation and development of the Russian civilization at the stage of its disintegration
with subjective, personal traits of the Romanovs. Fourthly, we specified one of the reasons behind the
fall of the dynasty – their sociocultural alienation from the society.

Keywords

family-generic integrity, integrity principle, the concept of family-generic integrity of a person, three periods in the history of the Romanov dynasty, types of dynastic generations, results of state activity
