Abstract

On the basis of published and archival materials, the paper analyzed the development and
improvement of humanities study programmes and curricula in the 1920s–1930s. Attention is drawn to
the introduction of compulsory educational programmеs for all universities; their wide use in humanities
specialities is shown. The specific character of forming humanities higher education in Belarus lies in
the fact that over a period of almost one hundred years, since Vilnа University had been closed in 1831,
there was no such higher education in Belarus. Both this fact and some other reasons (revolutionary
innovations and lack of teachers) had a certain effect on the teaching of humanities in the republic
in the 1920s–1930s. The author believes that individualization of study programmes and courses for
some non-political-ideological subjects was, on the whole, a positive development. Humanities and
social sciences were an important ideological tool for the new Communist leadership aspiring to build a
socialist society.
