Abstract

Having analyzed some new documents, the author studied the historical impact of urbanization on
traditional cultural landscapes of the Kola North. Particular attention is paid to the ideological, political and
cultural causes of urbanization. Possible models of interaction between the traditions and innovations
during this process are described. The author comes to the conclusion that landscape evolution did
not necessarily lead to a complete rejection of traditions but was accompanied by restructuring in the
hierarchy of old and new landscapes. Thus, the city has taken on the mission of forming local cultural
landscape of the future.
