Abstract

The paper presents an overview of three main trends in the study of metaphor in European linguistics at the current stage of metaphorology development. Within the first trend, the metaphor is considered as a tool of knowledge, a terminological metaphor, functioning in specialized texts of new disciplines and allowing us to comprehend these disciplines using the terms from already known areas. The second trend attempts to explain multiplicity of metaphor manifestations from the point of view of the whole. The numerous researches allow us to study the metaphor from the perspective of the integrated theoretical approach in the form of a hybrid theory of metaphor. The hybrid theory looks at the unity of the different factors influencing the heterogeneity of metaphor: mental simulation, contextual dependence, relevance and informative activity. The hybrid theory of metaphor is expected to unite the achievements of the comparative theory of metaphor, pragmatic studies, relevance theory and conceptual metaphor theory and to consider all the shortcomings of each of them. The third trend suggests using text corpora to analyze metaphors. As types of tagging, source domains and target domains of metaphorization are suggested. Studying the metaphor from the point of view of corpus linguistics allows us to verify intuitive knowledge.
